Robert The Doll

- Fort East Martello Museum, Key West, Florida, United States
- Made in 1904 as the life size effigy of the 4 yr old son of the Otto family in Key West. Stuffed with straw and meticulously hand sewn by a family servant, the doll was given to Robert Gene Otto as present. Upon receiving the doll, the boy gave the doll his first name “Robert” and from that day forward he would only answer to the name “Gene". Often they were seen playing together & overheard having conversations with one another, with Robert the Doll answering him back. When strange events started to happen Gene would swiftly respond by saying ”Robert Did It!” As Gene grew older he kept Robert by his side, building Robert his own room. Gene would place him in the third floor turret room window to keep him company while he painted. Robert rapidly became the topic of stories of the neighborhood children who would play on the streets below. With Gene dedicating so much of his time to his doll, Robert was repeatedly the focus of many a quarrels within Gene's marriage. Over the years Robert quickly became Key West's original blame doll. Whenever anything would come about, you could hear Gene and others say Robert Did It!

I was working for a local paper & was sent to the Martello Fort to photograph an event. I took various shots of the outside sign, staff hosting the event, etc. as I was making my way through the front sections of the museum. I occasionally checked to see that the photos were metered right for lighting, etc. All was fine, camera in working order, pictures, clear & fine.
I casually moved along & saw Robert. I figured I'd be polite & asked him if it was ok that I photograph him & the night's event. Not feeling any 'ill will' , took my shot & continued on my night.
When I got home & reviewed my work- the photos pre-Robert were all there, but the shots of him & the rest of the night no longer existed. GONE. I did nothing to my camera (changing lenses, or settings , battery was working, etc.) NOTHING WAS WRONG. I guess Robert was feeling naughty that night. Needless to say, I didn't have my work published for that event.
As a side note, I recently was back at the fort. I wanted a shot of Robert (maybe just for spite!) I waited until there were several people around him, distracting him. I got my photo & the rest of my pics were all fine too!! It's a shame there's no place to put the pic here to show you...

i have this doll i named her jane but every night i hear foot steps and a voice saying jennifer come talk to mee and i was in bed all night i didint answer it back but shes a medium doll so i dont know what to do? from jennifer
Robert I have yet to meet you and hope to someday soon. My son lives there on Cujo island near you he is 38 and single and he works on Key West Island,would you please watch over him,I know you can do this.He is a country boy at heart from the mountains of Pa.But love it there in the Florida Keys. Someday I will be honored to meet you.Your history interests me.You are an amazing doll,Peggy in Pa.
