The story of East Martello’s most famous resident began over 100 years ago when a Haitian girl gave young Robert Eugene Otto a handsome straw doll. Robert the Doll was to be Gene’s companion and friend for his entire childhood. Every Time the young boy was accused of some mischief, he would point to the doll and say “Robert Did It.” Today, Robert Did It”, remains a common expression in Key West.
